Self evaluation and repositioning

There has been a great deal of discussion regarding professionalisation of the supervision process. In our experience, professionalisation of the Board of Commissioners or Supervisory Board requires discussion not only of 'hardware' but also of 'software' aspects. In concrete terms, this means that the Board must agree on the reference framework on which basis it fulfils the supervisory role. Only then will the composure and clarity be achieved, which is necessary for an effective management process.

Moreover, the Board must of course have the necessary diversity in terms of know-how and skills. Wide representation and adequate information supply are crucial factors for good supervision. Finally, it is important that the Board members are capable of working together effectively. Good cooperation within the Board and with the management is essential, especially in times of change. During such periods in particular, not only 'facts' but also 'feelings' and well-considered decisions play a role.

Our Governance@work-programme pays attention to both 'hardware' and 'software' issues. This is a tried and tested recipe for quality supervision in many organisations where we have been able tot introduce our approach.

The evaluation and repositioning processes centre around the following questions:

  1. Wat is het members' view regarding the required involvement of the Board in strategic and operational subjects?
  2. Does the Board have a common vision of the strategic framework for the new organisation, and how do the members regard their roles?
  3. Do all members have clarity on 'who does what' and is there a common vision on the mutual climate the Board wishes to create?
  4. Is there agreement on the agenda to be applied by the Board, and on its monitoring? How do the members regard the information required by the Board in order to execercise supervision?
  5. What is the composition of the team when considering the various personalities within the Board of Supervisors, and how can each member's strengths be optimally utilised?
